What is cheapest Nikon or Canon Digital SLR with 50mm 1.8 lens and Live View LCD display?
I would prefer one that uses SD memory card (like my Nikon D40).
I'm now 85% sure (based on your answers/advices) that I will buy a Canon Digital Rebel XS (EOS 1000D).
(1) Does it carry a hole for the sync flash (to use with my strobe flash), or will I have to buy a hot shoe sync adopter seperately?
(2) Does the lens (F-apature) go down to 1.8, or, i'll have to buy a 50mm 1.8 lens seperately) ?
First unlike P&S cameras where you can change camera brands every year if you want, DSLR cameras are just part of a system.
Since you already have a Nikon system started, changing over to a Canon will just cost you a lot more money.
Actually you can buy a AF-S 50 mm f/1.4 lens for your current camera and be money ahead and you will still be able to use the other lenses in your Nikon system. Eventually you will by upgrading (three to five years) and with the advances in technology by then the new DSLR's well have many more features at a very small price.
Nikon D90, live view (you will never use it ... holding a two pound camera at arm's length is just asking for camera movement causing blur, unless you are planning on attaching it to a telescope or microscope), geo-tagging, and HD video. You can look for these features in a few years for nearer $450. I am sure you don't have all your photo technique established yet, so just spending money on a new camera body before you do will not put you ahead in the learning curve ... it is not the camera the makes the amazing images, it is you, using any fully adjustable camera. You just have to be patient.
