I live in the Florida panhandle and found what looks like the bone from the tail end of some animal. It is about 4 inches long. At the top(?) it looks like a vertebrae (there's a hole in the center) which is it's widest point, about 3/4". From the end of this "vertebrae" area the bone runs straight down, tapering to a point. On the underside of the taper, especially near the pointed end, the bone appears to have barbs. Can anyone help me with with what this bone is and what use the barbs have?
Sounds like it could be a vertebre....from a decent sized animal, possibly a bear, deer or domestic animal like a pig. But unless an expert in vertebrate osteology (study of bones and skeletons) could see it there's no real way to make a positive ID, only an educated guess.
The prongs are attachments for muscle groups, to give a supporting structure to the animal's frame.
