I want to semi-corrugate metal through milling into it - what is the strongest way to do this?
I am aiming to strengthen a stainless steel sheet by corrugating it. Not in the traditional sense (wave cross-section) but by milling out vertical (or horizontal) sections to a depth of perhaps...8mm. What is the best layout to produce maximum strength? Thanks
What you are proposing to do would actually weaken, not strengthen the steel plate.
Let me use an example... when you take a thin, flat piece of sheet steel it can easily be bent in any direction desired. (think of something that is 1mm thick and 500 x 500 in size)
To make the steel sheet stronger in a particular direction it is folded or corrugated to make it more rigid in one direction (like the example of building or roof sheathing that you used in your question)
The principal that makes it more rigid is that the sheet is now "thicker" due to the folds.
Where the sheet was once 1mm thick, when it is folded into wave pattern the peaks and valleys of the folds make the sheet 30mm thick (for example)... BAM! Now it is stiffer than before, but only in one direction. The other direction is still as weak as the original sheet steel.
If you take a piece of plate steel and mill out channels to give it a corrugated look, you have only taken steel away and not added any thickness therefore it gains no stiffness and is actually weaker than the original plate.
Pretty difficult to explain without some pictures, sorry if my wordy explanation was confusing.
If you need to stiffen the plate you should ADD thickness... perhaps you could weld on some thin fins of some type that would add to its thickness.
Feel free to email me directly, check for a link on my profile page, I'll see what I can do to help you think of alternative ideas if you would like.
