Hi, I'm training to be a computer service technician and I'm just at the start of my career. So I've got the computer's case open and I am literally going to dissassemble and reassemble a computer for the first time in my life. I am concerned about ESD because there are some aspects I am unsure of...
1) I have a small anti-static mat but its nowhere near big enough to place the entire computer on. Its one of those mats with an antistatic wristband, so if its connected to the mat and I touch the internal components, is that sufficient protection? Y/N
2) And what if I use my other hand to take out a slot of RAM, is my entire body free from ESD when I wear the strap? Y/N
3) What if the metal component on the stap isn't touching my wrist, does that mean I have no protection? Y/N
1/ In most cases - you should have a mat that is large enough to accommodate the job you working on. However - if you do not have one - there are ways around it. Make sure you ground another device (computer desktop for example by connecting the power cord to the supply line) and are able to first discharge any static/ESD that you carry by just touching/holding onto the body/metal surface of the grounded device. In addition to this - you would still place your job on the mat and use the wristband. Make sure that the metal cap is touching your skin. This way - you reduce the chances of an ESD impact
3/ The metal clip on the strap - does need to touch your skin/wrist at all times. This ensures that the 2 surfaces - the mat and the job are at the same potential (usually ground)
